Oklahoma Baptists are encouraging churches to promote their Sunday Schools through “Great Day Sunday” on Oct. 25. Churches across the state will join to reach people for Christ and bring them to Sunday School.
“Sunday School has long been recognized as an effective means to mobilize the church to reach the unchurched,” said Philip Jones, Oklahoma Baptists Multi-Vocational Pastor (MVP) Consultant.
The focus of the Great Day Sunday strategy is to provide churches with a tool that will help them reach the unreached. Its simplicity allows for pastors who have limited time to implement a strong strategy and see positive results. According to Jones, the first church to implement the strategy experienced a 20 percent increase in weekly attendance and a 90 percent increase on Great Day Sunday.
On Great Day Sunday, pastors will unify their churches to build attendance by creating a framework to reach out to their community. The lingering effects of the COVID pandemic and other cultural issues have taken a toll on congregations. However, by reaching out into the community as a unified church body, those effects can be reversed.
“Great Day Sunday is a simple plan to implement because it uses elements that most churches are already familiar with,” said Jones. “The goal is to have great attendance, great fellowship in Sunday School and emphasize the worship service.”
Although focused on smaller-sized churches, the strategy can be adopted to fit any timeline with any size congregation. The heart behind the plan seeks to give the pastor the vision and bring others around him to help bring it to life.
“Throughout Oklahoma Baptists’ history, we have used high-attendance campaigns as a tool in the effort of evangelism,” said Jones. “We should never underestimate what God can do in a lost person when they hear the Gospel.”
