SAN SABA, Texas—Oklahoma Baptist Disaster Relief (DR) volunteers have arrived in Kerr County, Texas and are on the ground responding to the damage caused by catastrophic flooding over the Fourth of July weekend. More than 100 homes were impacted in this Central Texas city and the reported death toll tragically has risen to more than 100 lives lost, including children, in the flash flooding.
A volunteer team arrived on Tuesday and have spent the past couple of days working on their first home. Texas leadership estimates that the number of affected homes in Kerr County will be in the hundreds. DR teams will wait until flood waters recede and it is safe enough to begin response there.
Jason Yarbrough, state director of Oklahoma Baptist DR, said, “Texas Southern Baptist Disaster Relief volunteers have been serving meals to first responders and others in response to the devastating flood waters in Central Texas. They have also been busy, assessing damage and coordinating a full response to help those affected.”
He added, “We have teams building to go and serve over the next several weeks. We will begin helping in the community of San Saba and then be ready to move and help wherever we are needed.”
Currently, there is a team of 26 scheduled to leave Mon., July 14, and a team of 20 ready for the following week.
Yarbrough has also been in contact with the New Mexico Disaster Relief state director regarding flooding in the Ruidoso area. Oklahoma DR has offered to go there and help if needed.
Oklahoma Baptist DR requests continued prayers for all those affected by the devastating floods and for the response teams as they seek to bring hope and help in this tragic situation.
