Dr. Joshua Chism, Oklahoma Baptist University associate professor of music and director of choral activities, will conduct a performance at Carnegie Hall on May 25, 2026, featuring OBU students.
The concert will include René Clausen’s “Memorial,” a large-scale choral work with orchestra reflecting themes of hope and perseverance following 9/11. The program will also feature a newly commissioned piece by composer Patti Drennan, created specifically for the performance.
At OBU, Chism conducts the University Chorale, Bisonette Glee Club, Community Chorale and Golden Bison Vocal Jazz ensemble. He also teaches courses in vocal technique, educational pedagogy, and private voice. He said the opportunity to conduct at Carnegie Hall is a significant moment for the university and its students.
“It is humbling to stand on a stage where so many legendary musicians and ensembles have performed,” Chism said. “Sharing this experience with our students is especially meaningful. A performance at Carnegie Hall will be a lifelong highlight for them, and I hope it inspires them to strive for excellence as musicians and individuals.”
Chism selected Clausen’s “Memorial” as a fitting choice for the Memorial Day performance, noting its message of resilience and hope.
“This work is a powerful expression of overcoming adversity,” he said. “Our students will have the unique opportunity to bring this meaningful piece to life in a space that holds such rich history.”
The invitation to perform at Carnegie Hall aligns with Chism’s vision of providing OBU students with transformative, high-impact experiences.
“This is an unprecedented opportunity for the OBU choral department,” Chism said. “While performing at Carnegie Hall is an incredible honor, the journey of preparation is where our students will experience the most growth—musically, mentally, and spiritually.”
Chism holds degrees in music education, composition, and conducting from the University of Oklahoma, the University of Missouri–Columbia, and Missouri State University, as well as Kodály Certification. Beyond his academic work, he has served as a church musician since 2012.
Carnegie Hall, located in New York City, has been a landmark performance venue since its opening in 1891. Known for its exceptional acoustics and historical significance, it has hosted some of the world’s most celebrated musicians and ensembles.
