(Written and endorsed by the BGCO’s ERLC Committee) In the last few months, there have been Tea Party rallies organized across the nation to voice the concern of many American citizens about increased government spending through bailouts and stimulus packages, and the government takeover of private corporations. All of this is going to lead to increased national debt, higher taxes and increased inflation. The great concern is the tremendous financial burden all this spending is going to be handed down to our children and grandchildren. All of this is true and worthy of protest, but in reality, the financial woes of our nation are only a symptom of a far greater problem.

When you read Deuteronomy 28, God’s message to the His people is “If you will take care of the morality, I will take care of the prosperity.” There has been a quote that has been made popular in the last few months: “Never let a crisis go to waste.” The statement was made in regards to the present, on-going financial crisis of our nation. The problem is they are focusing on the wrong crisis. The real crisis is the moral free fall of this nation that has lost its way as we move farther and farther away from Judeo Christian values that our founding fathers used as guides to establish our nation as a republic ruled by law based on the authority of Holy God.

Our second President, John Adams, once wrote “It is Religion and Morality alone which can establish the Principles upon which Freedom can securely stand.” Adams also wrote “Our Constitution was made only for a Moral and Religious people.”

James Madison, the father of our Constitution, wrote “We have staked the whole future of American civilization, not upon the power of government, but upon the capacity of mankind for self-government, upon the capacity of each and all of us to govern ourselves, to control ourselves, to sustain ourselves according to the Ten Commandments of God.”

What does the moral free fall look like? America is a world leader in promoting abortions. She is the leading producer of pornography in the world. States continue to legalize same-sex “marriage.” According to the State Department Bureau of Justice Statistics, the United States is the largest customer of worldwide human trafficking. We could also list illegitimate births and child abuse, as well as many others. There is also the fact that for the first time in 233 years, a President of the United States has proclaimed a whole month as National Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender Pride Month, which our President did the month of June 2009. This is especially alarming when our President, on the other hand, was unwilling to recognize the tradition of our National day of Prayer.

Because of the present moral crisis, on July 2 at our state Capitol, pastors and religious leaders from across our state were asked to attend and participate in the Oklahoma Citizen’s Proclamation For Morality reading. Those present signed the proclamation, just as our founding fathers signed the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776. You can still sign the proclamation and be a part of history as we take a stand for morality.

The final statement of the proclamation states “Be it resolved that we, the undersigned, humbly call upon Holy God, our Creator, Sustainer, and Redeemer, to have mercy on this nation, to stay His hand of judgment, and grant a national awakening of righteousness and Christian renewal as we repent of our great sin.”

It is our hope that this press conference can be an inspiration to leaders in other states to take a similar stand to show God’s people refuse to let go of what this nation was originally established for and the moral principles which have made her the great nation she once was.
