As a collegiate missionary with the Baptist Collegiate Ministry (BCM) at the University of Oklahoma (OU), Adyson Barber’s main role is in Greek ministry, so she focuses on young women in the Panhellenic sororities on campus. She facilitates weekly Bible studies, plans outreach events and hosts and plans gatherings at the BCM and in her home. She is excited to see God change lives through this ministry just as He used it to change hers.

Adyson acknowledges that ministry to college students has its challenges.

“Reaching the sorority community can be challenging,” she said, “because they have built-in friends, fun events, entertainment and resources, so it is sometimes difficult to help young women realize that what God has for them is better than any worldly thing. There is also a party culture within the Greek system that makes it difficult to reach those students.

“But it is so rewarding to see the girls I have invested in be excited to invest in others,” Adyson continued. “I get to be part of them learning to love God and to have the desire to spend time daily with Him. This ministry changed my life entirely, so overall, the best part of this work is having the privilege of being there for sorority women who are just like the person I was five years ago.”

Kaitlin is one such young woman.

“Kaitlin is the first girl I ever discipled,” Adyson said. “She sent me this quote about discipleship.
‘Discipleship allowed me to grow in my faith by giving me tangible steps and support as I learned to read the Bible consistently, memorize Scripture and strive to be a faithful Christian. This was my first introduction to what it means to be accountable and to seek community in a Christ-focused way.’ Kaitlin has now discipled four women and is part of a six-generation discipleship line.”

Pray for Adyson as she strives to guide young women toward God. Pray the sorority Bible study will be fruitful and that leaders will multiply by making disciples. Pray the BCM team will have stamina and endurance to finish the school year strong as they prepare for their spring break trip, summer overseas trips, banquet and much more.
