MOORE—Hundreds of children from across the Oklahoma City metro area gathered at Moore, First, July 27-29 for Worship Arts Camp for Kids (WACK).

Previously known as Young Musicians’ Camp, WACK allows students to express themselves in creative outlets while also showing them how their creativity can be used to advance the Gospel. Sponsored by the Metro Baptist Network OKC (MBNOKC), the camp provides creative activities and lessons in worship arts. This includes music, drawing, stage design, photography and more. At the end of the three-day camp, students put on a musical utilizing the creative skills they learned throughout the week.

Planning begins with choosing a theme for the camp. The theme for this year’s camp was “Race Day,” based on Hebrews 12:1, “Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us…”

“The focus is on worship arts and how we can give those talents back to God,” said Patricia Farewell, WACK Committee chairman. “I love the worship aspect. It’s good practice for when we eventually get to heaven.”

Each day, students participated in classes that helped them realize what their calling in worship arts could be. Additionally, students are shown how their skills can be used in the mission field. Alex Montgomery, a missionary who recently returned from the mission field, instructed groups on how they can do mission work at home. He accomplished this by telling the students of his time in Colombia and had the students make drawings of what they thought sharing the Gospel looked like.

“I wanted them to be able to do something artistic while also sharing the Gospel,” he said. “I’m so excited about missions and I want to make sure we’re mobilizing the next generation. Worship arts are great for that because the songs and verses you learn stick with you long after.”

For more than 50 years, WACK has been inspiring children grades 3-6 to express their creativity through worship arts. The MBNOKC, formerly known as the Capital Baptist Association, is a growing network of nearly 170 Southern Baptist churches in Oklahoma City.
