The popular 90’s sitcom Friends popularized the term “Friendsgiving,” a celebration of Thanksgiving among a group of friends instead of family. This special meal is commonly held by young adults and college age students, but at OKC, Southern Hills, the meal was shared among friends in their senior adult ministry.
Tommy Merritt served as the college associate at OKC, Southern Hills and hosted Friendsgiving for numerous years for students. When he made the transition to his current role, minister to senior adults, Merritt wanted to continue that tradition.
“I thought there’s no reason we can’t do the same thing with senior adults,” he said.
For only $10, OKC, Southern Hills provides the meal and venue, always making sure that “desserts are top-notch.” This year, the fellowship featured smoked ham and turkey, as well as a wide selection of coconut and chocolate pies.
The purpose of the event is to give the senior adults a filling holiday feast, both nutritionally and spiritually. During the meal, Merrit makes sure to crack a few “dad jokes” and a guest speaker encourages the senior adults with a devotional focusing on thanksgiving.
This year, lifelong educator and mission trip leader Jack Clay delivered the devotional. He focused on the Pilgrims, reminding attendees of their faith and thankfulness for God’s provision. The senior adults were encouraged to do the same, share their faith with those around them and be thankful for the many ways God is faithful.
“Friendsgiving” isn’t just a meal. It’s an opportunity for the Gospel to be shared with senior adults who might not otherwise hear it.
“My hope is that (Friendsgiving) will be a blessing to our folks,” Merritt said. “I also hope it will be an easy way for them to invite others to join us. Who doesn’t like a good holiday meal with delicious pie?”
