Hybel's comment about "when people crossed the line of faith and become Christians" may be part of the problem. The Biblical perspective of salvation includes repentance, faith, and confession. The motivation for salvation is not heaven, having needs met, or satisfying "felt needs."
Salvation is surrendering completely to God and turning from sin, regardless of whether God provides spiritual, emotional, or physical blessings. We need salvation because of what we are (sinners)--not because of what we want (blessings).
