As a young SBC pastor I almost threw up when I opened my new Baptist Messenger. Headlining the Messenger is this article that throws support and validation behind Sally Kern and her freedom of speech as it represents all those 'who want to stand for the truth of God's Word.' I would have to disagree with Sally that in fact what she spoke had very little to do with God's Word and to insinuate that she was speaking on behalf of God is both laughable and appalling. If you listen to her remarks in that speech you will clearly determine that her words are mere speculation and hearsay at best. To state that civilizations have fallen because of homosexuality is speculation, to state that our schools are indoctrinating children to a homosexual agenda is speculation, to state that homosexuality is the greatest threat to our country is speculation and borderline insane. At best these arguments have supporters but none have solid conclusive research. This is not God's Word.
The only thing that she said that remotely resembled Biblical truth was that homosexuality was a sin. Yet all the clarity she could muster was that "according to God's Word it is not the right kind of lifestyle." That is it. Yet we parade her as a hero of free speech and Christian bravery on the front page of our paper. The rest of her speech was a discourse of conservative superiority. This free speech looked more like a talk at a local church's gossip hour. How does what this representative said represent a Christian voice in a dying world or demonstrate mercy and compassion for the lost in our cities? Is this our approach? Are homosexuals our Samaria?

Here is the problem that I am seeing with our approach to the homosexual issue. We are tending as Christian conservatives to lose sight of the individual and fight against an ideal or an agenda. We attack the agenda but what we are failing to realize is that the world is not responding to our attacks well because the agenda's are representative of people. These people are hurting, dying and lost and we are marginalizing them. The Christian Gospel is that a Savior was put to death for our sins, all of them. We are called to go as Christ did to the lost both sacrificially and incarnationally. Are we 'filling up in our flesh what was lacking in Christ's afflictions' as Paul stated in Colossians? We must at a great cost to ourselves reach the lost at Christ. We do not succeed in reaching the lost by throwing moral darts from congressional meetings. For what it is worth, Christians are not called to save this nation. We are citizens of the Kingdom of Heaven we are called to reach the lost. Obviously we are called to seek the welfare of the city but we certainly are failing to take relevant strategies towards that aim.
The ironic thing is the story right above this one here online is about how do we reach 18-34 year olds.

"Jake"-Wow...almost throwing up over a woman who is trying to stand up for what she believes in? How is this helping to spread the truth? Sure would be nice if we as Christians would not judge Sally, but pray for her in this trying time. She is not a perfect person and I find it very distrubing that you would expect her to be. I was there at the rally, and she spoke with an honest sincerity that few politicians are able to do in our day. She is looked to as a hero, because she is willing to say what she believes and not back down because of attacks. Eph. 6:10-18
And as for your comment that there is no basis for her statement that homosexuality has destroyed civilizations, I think she may have been trying to say that homosexuality is one of the factors in the downfall of nations of antiquity. You should be familiar with at least two cities that were destroyed because of their unnatural desires, Sodom and Gomorrha, and there is historical evidence that during the fall of Rome there was an increase in homosexual behavior, along with other excesses at it's demise. If you take the time to study history, you will see that God, who is the King of Kings and Lord of Lords, will not long let a nation who so mocks him survive. If we do not take a stand somewhere as Christians with much prayer, I fear we are closer to destruction than we can imagine.
Can I suggest to you an excellent video series produced by Focus on the Family called "The Truth Project". If you can find a church or small group in your area showing this perhaps you can see that the urgency is immediate and the need is overwhelming for people to know the truth.
And yes, you are right we need to do it in love. But when we fall, we have an advocate, Jesus Christ. If we humble ourselves and pray, he will lead us and guide us. So don't be mad at Sally for not doing it perfectly the way you would have, pray for her to be guided by the Holy Spirit to walk in the way of our Lord. Then we will all win.
God Bless You.

Amen Jake. For those willing to attack the frontlines in mission work, including gays and muslims, Mrs. Kern supposed speech and the Messengers apparent validation of such is a travest. Read the editorial a few weeks ago, "Is it Sin?" That in essence sums how this should have been handled.

rebecca, if she believes what she said, fine. But that does not mean that the BGCO should hail her as a hero. For what its worth it may very well be that the Roman civilization fell because of homosexuality, I think it had more to do with the Gauls, but our primary jobs as Christians is not simply to save the US. We are to seek the welfare of the US but it is in God's hands how and when nations rise and fall. We are to seek to save the lost and to be like Christ and die on their behalf. Sally Kern has and is now 'dying' for her self and her right to speak not on behalf of the lost so that she may be heard by them. Why are our rights more important than the lost?
last thought.... how many people who held to a positive affirmation of homosexuality or practiced it changed their mind when they heard Sally Kern's 'insightful and prophetic words' ? None, and in fact many on television and radio networks around the world pointed at her and said, "See, this is what 'they' think of us. They Hate Us and because they hate they must be wrong." Now the BGCO comes out and confirms their suspicion. We do hate them no matter how many times we say 'hate the sin and love the sinner' the reality is we aren't separating the two. We simply hate them. You can't evangelize the lost if you hate them. They are our Samaria.
